The Benefits of Laughing Yoga

The benefits of laughing yoga extend beyond coping with stress to strengthening the immune system and improving your overall stress health.

You don't need humor or comedy for this type of yoga...all you need is a childlike playfulness and a willingness to partake in these yoga exercises.

Laughter is more contagious than the flu doing it's winter rounds in the school yard.

It is this contagious laughter that laughing yoga relies upon.

While doing the yoga exercises the group members interact and maintain eye contact.

Laughter sessions rely on fake laughter.

But interestingly the body does not know the difference between fake laughter and real laughter.

In the typical laughter yoga session it doesn't take long for the deep peals of laughter to resonate off the walls.

There are a number of reasons why this type of yoga may be good for you and your stress levels. Laughter has been known to:

  • relax muscles and reduces tension. Indeed the homeostasis after a good laugh is similar to that experienced in progressive muscle relaxation.
  • provides pain relief
  • reduces some of the physical signs of stress (Fry, 1986)
  • increase respiration and oxygenation of the blood
  • promote sleep and relaxation
  • improve confidence and self esteem
  • reduce stress
  • relieve the mind from the burden of negative thinking
  • reduce the incidence of depression
  • elevate antibody levels and increase natural killer cells (these cells that fight tumorous growth)
  • reconnect and unite people
  • provide the space for people to feel good about themselves.

The benefits of humor and yoga are many and enable us to "lighten the load" that comes with stress.
