Reduce demands as a natural sleep aid

by Evelyn

I work in a busy industry that involved me working late and getting up early. I also looked for opportunities to drop responsibilities.

At the same time I reduced my overhead and cost of living which allowed me to reduce my overall time at work.

Going to bed late and getting up early was really starting to affect my sleep and then the rest of my life.

Reduce demands to sleep better
by: Kell

Hi Evelyn,
Congratulations for reducing demands to sleep better. In our culture much sleep deprivation is intentional...getting up early and staying late is considered a characteristic of hard work.

However, with two nights of sleep deprivation (this is a loss of an hour or two of sleep each night) can lead to sleep debt...the effect of which is equivalent to having an alcohol reading of 0.05 (Mayo Clinic).

If you sleep 6 hours per night for 2 successive nights (ie. 4 hours of sleep loss when compared to the recommended 8 hours) you also slow reaction time by 10-15 percent (Sipe, 1997)...and continued sleep debt leads to loss of performance and more susceptible to illness and accidents.

So well done on making a good change.

All the best,

Kell
