By drawing your focus away from the many distractions of a busy life, yoga brings your awareness to the breathing and the different poses (asanas). By enhancing the union of the mind, body and spirit yoga promotes a relaxed and tranquil effect.

Increased fitness. Yoga, the stretching combined with diaphragmatic breathing, can release muscle tension and exercise your body. As you learn different poses, which require balance and focus, you increase your flexibility and muscle endurance. This can reduce injuries in other areas of your life.

Management of chronic health conditions. Relaxation yoga can activate the parasympathetic nervous system. This means that you turn off the fight-or-flight response and turn on the relaxation response. This means that yoga counters the effects of stress. Understanding Relaxation Yoga

Many people across the world are reaping the benefits from relaxation yoga exercises.

Most research in the 20th century has been conducted on Hatha yoga. This yoga exercise can reduce stress and has been shown to be beneficial for coping with certain diseases such as diabetes and cancer.

Many of us know that stress can cause an increase in blood pressure, and have consequences for your health.

There are many different styles of yoga and Hatha Yoga is thought to be a good choice for stress management.

Hatha Yoga can reduce blood pressure through the relaxation effect of the different postures.

When the relaxation response is activated, your heartbeat slows and your breathing and blood pressure decrease. The body turns on it's natural healing mechanism.

The core principles of Hatha Yoga are the poses (asanas) and breathing.

Asanas. The physical movements of yoga are known as asanas. Often performed at the beginning or the end of the Hatha yoga session is the Salute to the Sun – which consists of 12 positions.

There are a number of other asanas which include:

  • The Mountain Pose (Tadasana)
  • Head of Cow (Gomukhasana)
  • The Cobra
  • The Human Triangle
  • The Corpse Pose

Breathing. Another core element of Hatha Yoga is breathing. Each asana is combined with pranayama breathing (or yoga breathing) which uses from the diaphragm. This diaphragmatic breathing activates the relaxation response through reduced thoracic pressure and the baroceptor reflex response.
